Activated Carbon for Mercury Removal

Activated Carbon for Mercury Removal: Selecting the Right Grade for Flue Gas and Process Streams

Mercury removal from flue gas and process streams calls for more than one adsorption number. Coal, coconut, wood, nutshell and bamboo series offer a range of pore structures and particle sizes to compare against your gas conditions and target duty. Selection starts with micropore development, surface area, hardness and particle size. Series references such as iodine value, BET and CTC are shown here; batch figures, packing and documents are confirmed before quotation.

DESCRIPTION

Explore description details to support your evaluation.

Mercury removal from flue gas and process streams depends on more than a single adsorption number. Coal-based granular activated carbon is used in fixed beds and injection systems because its pore structure and surface chemistry can capture elemental and oxidized mercury. Selection should follow the gas conditions, the target removal duty and how the carbon is dosed or retained.

How the carbon works

Capture is influenced by surface area, pore volume, particle size and contact time in the duct or bed. A microporous structure provides sites for mercury and mercury compounds. Granular grades suit fixed beds where pressure drop and handling strength matter; finer grades disperse into the gas stream for injection. Because mercury behaviour varies with temperature, gas composition and oxidized mercury, practical selection is made on the intended operating window rather than one universal grade.

What to compare

  • Adsorption indicators such as iodine value and CTC adsorption, giving a first view of activity.

  • Physical properties including BET surface area, bulk density and hardness, which affect bed behaviour.

  • Particle size, balancing contact efficiency against pressure drop.

  • Actual concentration, flow, temperature and desired outlet level, which decide bed or injection suitability.

For a relevant recommendation

Include the treated stream, expected mercury concentration, flow or capacity, operating temperature, target outlet level and preferred particle size. State whether the carbon will be used in a fixed bed or injected, and note packaging and quantity. This allows the most suitable coal-based granular activated carbon grade to be matched to the application, with specifications on this page as the reference and batch values confirmed before quotation.

ADVANTAGES

Mercury removal depends on pore structure, not marketing claims. These points show what to verify before choosing a grade.

Pore structure suited to mercury capture

Mercury capture relies on developed micropores and suitable surface chemistry. The frozen spec plan reports iodine value 500-1100 mg/g and BET surface area 650-1000 m2/g.

FAQ

How does activated carbon remove mercury from flue gas or process streams?

Mercury in combustion flue gas and many process streams is captured by activated carbon through physical adsorption on the porous surface, especially in micropores, and by chemical reaction when the carbon is impregnated with sulfur, iodine or other reagents. Elemental mercury (Hg0) is the hardest form to capture because it is insoluble and volatile, so grades intended for mercury duty are selected for high micropore volume, a suitable impregnation and a pore structure that promotes contact at the operating temperature.

Which physical and adsorption properties matter most for mercury service?

For mercury duty, three groups of properties are normally compared before a grade is confirmed:

  • Surface area and micropore volume set the number of adsorption sites and the working capacity.

  • Adsorption indicators such as methylene blue and CTC adsorption help compare pore development and gas-phase activity between grades.

  • Mechanical and handling data such as hardness, moisture, ash, bulk density, pH and particle size confirm the carbon can survive the intended contactor.

Which particle size and contactor form should I choose?

The statement of work, the solids loading and the available pressure drop decide the form. Granular or pelletized carbon (typically 4x8, 4x10 or 6x12 mesh) suits fixed beds and flue-gas injection or bed systems where dusting must be limited. Powdered carbon suits injection into a duct or baghouse or a short-contact process. This series can be supplied from 4 to 40 mesh, so the right cut depends on your contactor design rather than on the mercury level alone.

How should I specify a mercury-removal grade before ordering?

Start from the duty, not from a single number. Share the gas or liquid composition, mercury concentration and speciation, flow rate, operating temperature and pressure, contact time, water or acid content, target outlet level and the contactor form you intend to use. From those inputs we can discuss a grade and an agreed specification plan. Batch values are confirmed before quotation, and mercury performance on a specific stream is not guaranteed because it depends on the full operating envelope.

What should I include in a quotation enquiry?

Please send the treatment target (mercury in flue gas, incinerator off-gas, natural gas or a liquid stream), the inlet concentration and flow rate, the required outlet specification, the expected contactor form and particle size, and the quantity for the first order. If a specific document set is required, state which reports or certificates you need. We will check the application and the quoted specification with the responsible technical contact, and confirm price, availability and delivery in writing rather than on this page.

Can you provide sample reports or certificates for this grade?

Our company holds an ISO 9001:2015 certificate (No. 06524Q01338R0S, valid until 11 June 2027) whose scope is activated carbon sales. RoHS sample reports and an SDS are also available. These documents refer to the samples and the scope actually stated in them, and they are not a certification of every product in the series. The document set released with a particular order is confirmed during the enquiry, together with the agreed specification plan.
