Coal-based granular activated carbon for H2S removal
Activated Carbon for H2S Removal: Selection Guide for Coal, Coconut Shell and Impregnated Grades
Activated carbon removes hydrogen sulfide from biogas, wastewater off-gas and industrial air streams through catalytic oxidation, converting H2S into sulfur species held in the pores. Coal-based, coconut shell and impregnated grades are available for review against your concentration, flow, humidity and target outlet level. Share your duty data and we will discuss a selection direction, then confirm batch values and documents before quotation.
Send your H2S concentration, flow rate and target outlet level so the grade and batch values can be confirmed.

DESCRIPTION
Explore description details to support your evaluation.
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a corrosive, odour-bearing gas found in biogas upgrading, wastewater treatment, natural gas conditioning and many industrial air streams. Removing it early protects downstream equipment and catalysts. Activated carbon is widely used for this duty because its pore network provides a large surface area on which H2S and its oxidation products can be captured.
How Activated Carbon Removes H2S
H2S is not simply trapped by physical adsorption. On activated carbon it is converted through catalytic oxidation, typically into elemental sulfur and sulfates held in the pore structure. Because the mechanism is catalytic, oxygen and an appropriate moisture level matter: dry, oxygen-free streams can limit conversion, while very high humidity can condense in the pores. An H2S duty is therefore defined by the whole operating envelope: concentration, flow, temperature, relative humidity and oxygen content.
Choosing the Right Grade
The main selection decision is between plain and impregnated grades. Plain grades based on coal or coconut shell can work on simple oxidation duties, but unmodified carbon has limited capacity for high H2S loads. Impregnated carbons increase the rate and capacity of conversion and are usual for concentrated or continuous streams, though they can add handling and disposal considerations.
Coconut shell grades offer high hardness and low dust for tight beds and cyclic service; coal grades suit duties where bulk density and mechanical stability matter. Finer granules give faster kinetics but higher pressure drop; coarser sizes reduce resistance at some cost in reaction rate.
Information for an Inquiry
Because capacity depends on operating conditions as much as on the carbon, useful quotes require duty data. Please state the stream, H2S concentration and flow rate, temperature, relative humidity and available oxygen, target outlet level, bed or vessel size, and required particle size. Batch-specific values are confirmed before quotation.

Key points buyers compare when specifying activated carbon for H2S removal duty.
Grades matched to hydrogen sulphide duty
Coal-based, coconut shell, wood-based, nutshell and bamboo series can be discussed against your gas stream, so the shortlist reflects the duty rather than a single stock grade.

FAQ
Explore faq details to support your evaluation.
What information should an H2S removal inquiry include?
Describe the gas stream and your target: H2S concentration and expected variation, flow rate or space velocity, temperature, relative humidity, oxygen content, and other contaminants. Also state the required particle size, bed configuration, packing preference, delivery location, and annual quantity so the quotation matches your operation.
Which carbon type is used for H2S removal?
H2S removal usually relies on catalytic or impregnated grades rather than plain untreated carbon. Impregnated carbons are commonly selected when oxygen and moisture are available to convert H2S into sulfur species retained in the pores. Coal-based and coconut shell-based carbons differ in pore structure, hardness, and density, so the choice depends on gas conditions and required efficiency.
How do specifications relate to H2S removal performance?
Specifications describe the carbon as supplied; they do not guarantee removal capacity for every gas stream. Iodine value and surface area indicate pore development, while hardness, ash, moisture, pH, bulk density, and particle size affect handling and bed behavior. For H2S service, impregnation type, moisture, oxygen, and contact time often matter more than a single number.
Can you supply a sample for H2S testing?
A sample can be arranged after the application and grade direction are discussed. Because performance depends on the actual gas composition, a representative gas test is more useful than a general sample request. Please state the quantity needed, test conditions, and analytical method. Sample terms and costs are confirmed by our team before shipment.
What should be confirmed before ordering?
Confirm the selected grade, agreed specification plan, particle size, packaging, and required documents. Batch values for the required metrics should be reviewed and accepted in writing. Price, available quantity, lead time, and delivery terms are confirmed separately. Please also confirm the delivery address and any special handling needs; the written quotation or order confirmation is binding.
How do I submit an inquiry for evaluation?
Send your inquiry through the contact channel on this page. Include gas stream details, target H2S level, flow or bed information, required particle size, packing preference, and expected quantity. If a sample test is planned, describe the conditions and method. Our team will review the information and discuss a selection direction before confirming specifications.
